Taiwan Export Recovery Good for OFWs

According to top labor frontrunners, the resurgence of the Taiwan export sector is an indication of job security for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and spells more job opportunities in Taiwan.

In a separate statement, both Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairman Tomas Alcantara and Pilipino Manpower Agencies Accredited to Taiwan (PhilMAT) President Jackson Gan said that the apparent recovery of the Taiwanese export industry ensures the security of jobs there, and could also create new job opportunities for more Filipinos.

Based on the data released by the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Statistics Department, the export industry earned an all-time high of $34.39 billion last March 2010, posing an increase of 43.66 percent compared to last year. This record erased the previous one, set in October 2007 when export earnings totaled to $32.2 billion.

The said increase is brought about by the rise of demand for Taiwan-made liquid crystal display (LCD) display panels, handsets, and computers by China, Japan and other ASEAN countries, including the Philippines.

With the said development, MECO is closely monitoring all possible opportunities for the deployment of highly skilled workers in Taiwan. On the other hand, OFWs who lost their jobs due to the 2008 world economic crisis have been recalled and are once again employed.

Based on reports, the electronics manufacturing sector is the biggest employer of overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan. Based on 2009 figures, of the 70,537 OFWs in Taiwan, some 46,972 are engaged in the electronics manufacturing, 25,000 of whom are in computer and communications and electronics parts manufacturing. Meanwhile, some 20,000 OFWs are in social services (caregivers, caretakers, nursing aids and domestic workers) and the others are in the construction sector, agriculture and fishery.
