IT-Committed Public Schools Recognized at 3rd Cebu Education Congress

Tayud National High School and Florencio Urot Memorial National High School were among the 65 public high schools in Cebu recognized by Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom), the corporate social responsibility arm of Globe Telecom, during the 3rd Cebu Education Congress held last February 19 – 22, 2009 at the SM City Cebu Trade Hall in Cebu City.

Organized by CEO Events and Expo Organizers, the education expo aims to aid parents and students alike who are looking for excellent education providers. Furthermore, the Cebu Education Expo is geared towards the demystification of career options among students and adults.

The 65 high schools honored came from the school division of Cebu, Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, Talisay City and Toledo City. These schools have been exerting efforts and pooling resources to sustain the donation that Globe has given them for the past three years under the telecommunication company’s Internet-In-Schools Program (ISP).

ISP provides free Internet access to partner schools in the country in contribution to the Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) program of the Ayala Foundation, Inc.

Other activities during the 3rd Cebu Education Congress included business seminars on new franchising trends by Willstrong Becker, Franchise Seminar by Rudolf A. Kotik of RK Franchise Consultancy, and Trademark Seminar by Atty. Karlo Nicolas. A job fair rounded up the exhibit event.

Independence Day Job Fair Set to Offer Over 150,000 Jobs

In celebration of the Philippines’ 111th Independence Day Celebration, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), together with other government agencies, government owned and control companies, government financial institutions, and private firms will stage a job and livelihood fair at Luneta Granstand from June 12 – 14, 2009.

Aptly titled, "Kalayaan 2009 Mega Job and Livelihood Fair," the three-day job fair and livelihood fair, like the Jobapalooza held last May 1, 2009, will be held simultaneously in 19 cities nationwide. According to DOLE Secretary Marianito Roque, about 1,000 companies from the private and government sector, including recruitment firms for overseas employment, will participate in the said event, offering over 170,000 vacancies.

Sec. Roque urged jobseekers to register early at the government-operated job site, www.phil-job.net in order to allow participating employers to pre-screen applicants and subsequently increase the number of on the spot hired attendants of the job fair. The labor chief stressed that companies may start hiring applicants prior to the Independence Day Job fair.

The first day of the job fair will host government agencies offering 50,000 vacancies for professionals and other jobseekers with civil service eligibility. Meanwhile, the second day will feature private local companies offering some 70,000. The following day, June 14, would feature recruitment agencies offering some 50,000 sea-based and land-based overseas employment.

During the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Reception held last March 27, 2009, President President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo stated that the Kalayaan 2009 Mega Job and Livelihood Fair shall replace the annual Independence Day parade which would cost the government P30 million. The said amount shall be channeled to the job fair and livelihood program.

Pag-IBIG Set Loan Program for Jobless Members

The Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund has announced that its members who are currently unemployed due to termination of employment contract, closure of company, lay-off, and retrenchment, will be able to avail loans from the agency under its new program.

According to Vice President Noli “Kabayan” De Castro, Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council Chairman and Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustee, the Special Short Term Loan (STL) Program for Displaced Workers was created to aid workers who were affected by the global financial downturn.

According to the program, Pag-IBIG members who must have made at least 24 monthly contributions can borrow an amount equivalent to fifty percent of their total savings. The loan is payable in three years, including a one-year grace period.

Unemployed members with existing Multi Purpose Loan (MPL) can borrow up to 50 percent (50%) of their remaining savings as Pag-IBIG has already deducted or offset the balance of their earlier loan from their outstanding contributions. Pag-IBIG Fund has also cancelled any incurred penalties.

Pag-IBIG Fund Deputy Chief Executive Officer Jaime Fabiana said, in a news release, that members need to submit an accomplished MPL Application Form and a notice of separation from employment/termination of services or a certification of retrenchment or lay-off. Mr. Fabian added that the Fund shall coordinate with the Department of Labor and Employment to secure a list of companies that closed and a list of repatriated overseas Filipino workers.

For the members’ convenience, their loan will either be credited to the borrower’s bank account through the Land Bank’s Payroll Credit Systems Validation (PACSVAL) or the Philippine Domestic Dollar Transfer System (PDDTS) facilities, and other similar modes of payment. Proceeds may also be released through a check, payable to the borrower.

Members can pay their loan to any Pag-IBIG Fund office or to any of its authorized collecting agents or banks. Should they find employment at any time during the loan term, they may continue paying through their new employers.

For questions or inquiries on the new program, visit any Pag-IBIG Branch or call the Pag-IBIG hotline at (632) 724-4244 or visit their website at http://www.pagibigfund.gov.ph/
