BPO Industry Generated 70,000 New Jobs

The country’s sunshine industry, the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector was able to create a total of 70,000 new jobs and posted a 19 percent increase last year.

Based on a presentation during the 10th e-Services Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition held at the SMX Convention Center, Business Processing Association of the Philippines Executive Director for Information and Research Gillian Joyce Virata said the sector now has 442, 162 employees and generated more than $7.2 billion in revenue last year, an increase of 19 percent from $6.1 billion last 2008.

The voice BPO still leads with the highest number of revenue share and job creation. It posted its 2009 revenues at $5 billion, a 22-percent increase from 2008 and gave jobs to 280,000 people. This was followed by back office or non-voice BPO, with $1.1 billion in earnings and 86,000 employees.

Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) Commissioner Ray Anthony Roxas Chua III said that the BPO industry is expected to pickup this year. He said that the country has to prepare for this by maintaining the supply of manpower and invest on infrastructure. While voice BPO is expected to grow, Comm. Chua said that non-voice BPO or knowledge process outsourcing is slowly gaining ground here in the Philippines.

In her presentation, Ms. Virata laid down the priority projects for 2010 which include the creation of a virtual BPO university, the rollout of the National Assessment Competency Program to an initial 10,000 students, the provision of P350 million worth of scholarships under the Pangulong Gloria Scholarship fund, the launch of a local and international campaign on the Filipino knowledge worker, and the conduct of the 2nd International Outsourcing Summit.

Ms. Virata said that legislation is also one of the priorities for 2010, specifically, the creation of the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the passage of the data privacy bill.

Pinoys to Look Forward to More Jobs Abroad as KSA Megacity Expansion Continue

Filipinos gunning to work overseas, particularly in Saudi Arabia, can look forward to a higher chance of getting hired as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) continues its mega industrial and economic cities expansion until 2024.

Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito Roque said that based on the report by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, KSA’s medium to long-term socio-economic development plans include the development of 12 mega industrial and economic cities across the Kingdom which are expected to employ millions of local and foreign workers until 2024.

Sec. Roque also cited a study by the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce which estimated that 10 million local and expatriate workers will be needed by the major development projects in the KSA. He said that with the robust construction activities aimed at making the KSA one of the world’s top investment destinations, it is projected that the Kingdom will remain the top OFW destination over the next several years.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be in need of aluminum installers, architects, carpenters, concrete finishers, draftsmen, drillers, electric/mechanical assistants, electricians, engineers, erectors, fabricators, foremen, heavy equipment operators, watchmen, mason, pipe fitters, plaster painters, plasterers, plumbers, riggers, safety officers, welders, and mechanics. Oil and gas workers will also be in demand in the Kingdom for the long-term projects.

Meantime, the following four integrated economic cities have already been launched in the KSA at a cost of about US$ 16 billion: 1) King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh, KSA with a potential to create one million jobs; 2) Jazan Economic City in Jazan, KSA which is projected to generate 500,00 new jobs; 3) Prince Abdullaziz Bin Moussaed Economic City in Hail, KSA which expected to become the largest transportation and logistics hub and supply chain centers in the Middle East; and 4) Knowledge Economic City in Madinah, KSA.

Other economic cities already launched in the KSA are the Hail Industrial City and Al-Mal Economic City. The Kingdom’s development projects also include a US$ 5.3 billion (SR 20 billion) light rail, buses, and sea transport system.

Gov't Agencies Extended Help to Haiti Quake-Affected OFWs

The Department of Labor and Employment, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Foreign Affairs continuously extends help to the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Haiti who were affected by the January 12 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Over the last February 4, 2010, a total of 23 Filipinos have been repatriated from Haiti; six arrived on January 29, five on January 30 and 12 on January 31. Eight more OFW were sent home last Thursday through the joint efforts of the three departments.

"We will extend whatever assistance that is available for them... I have also tasked all the concerned agencies of the Department to conduct a needs assessment analysis to the repatriates to identify the kinds of assistance they need", said DOLE Secretary Marianito Roque in a press statement.

Sec. Roque said that DOLE will explore every possible effort to retrain and retool these OFWs to make them more competitive in the future and ready for possible deployment to other countries.

Based on reports, a total of 462 recorded Filipinos were in Haiti — 290 civilians and 172 military and police peacekeepers. Six Filipinos, three of them members of the RP peacekeeping contingent, were confirmed killed. The remains of the four Filipinos who died in the killer quake arrived last Tuesday, February 2, 2010, and were given a hero’s welcome.

But according to Migrante International, more than a third of the total 477 Filipinos in Haiti are classified as undocumented migrants, while many other OFWs who entered Haiti are illegal since they use tourist visas.

In a report posted at the OWWA website, DFA and DOLE are shouldering expenses for the repatriation while OWWA and DSWD will provide psycho-social as well as reintegration assistance to the repatriates. The air tickets, meanwhile, were advanced by OWWA.
