Second Batch of Japan-bound Nurses, Caregivers Begin Training

The second batch of health workers composed of forty-six (46) nurses and 72 caregivers have started their six-month cultural and language training in Japan as part of the Japan – Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) on the Movement of Natural Persons Employment Scheme.

In a statement, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Administrator Jennifer Jardin-Manalili announced today the 116 selected health workers have been deployed to Japan last May 9, 2010. Upon arrival in Japan, the 116 nurses and caregivers started to undergo intensive Japanese cultural and language training which will last for six months, after which they will start working in their respective health care institutions. The other two candidate caregivers, however, have acquired higher Japanese language proficiency and thus, they do not need to take the six-month language training and will depart for Japan at the beginning of June 2010.

During the send-off ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Manila Makoto Katsura said that since the candidates will be living in a new country and “working in an entirely different environment and interacting with people with a different culture and language,” he advised “not to let the unfamiliar faze” them.

”Good communication skills will help you cope much better with life in Japan. And do remember that the hospitals and caregiving facilities in Japan will also make efforts for the smooth facilitation and implementation of the program,” Ambassador Katusra added.

Administrator Manalili said that the screening for this year’s batch of health workers under the program was more rigorous to ensure an excellent and well prepared corps of candidates. The health workers have undergone a thorough pre-departure orientation seminar and were also be given a pre-flight briefing. She added that POEA plans to discuss with its Japanese counterpart agency its proposal that the six-month long Japanese culture and language training be conducted in the Philippines to give the next batch of health workers time with their families while undergoing the training.
