Philippine Employment Rate Slightly Lower for 2009

The country’s employment rate is lower by 0.1 percent in 2009 compared to 2008. This is according to the 2009 Annual Labor Force and Employment Status of the National Statistics Office.

The report was based on the average results of the four Labor Force Surveys conducted throughout 2009. Results show that the employment rate for 2009 is at 92.5 percent which is 0.1 percent lower compared to 2008, which was at 92.6 percent.

Among the 17 administrative regions, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) posted the highest employment rate at 97.7% in 2009. The National Capital Region on the other hand, ranked lowest at 87.2 percent.

Unemployment, on the other hand, numbered 2.8 million in 2009 representing an annual unemployment rate of 7.5 percent. Based on the NSO report, most of the unemployed persons were only able to reach high school education. This is slightly lower compared to the 2.71 million people unemployed in 2008. “Most of the unemployed persons reached high school.” The report added.

Those who were underemployed, or those employed persons who express the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or to have additional job, or to have a new job with longer working hours decreased to 6.7 millions in 2009; resulting to an underemployment rate of 19.1 percent. This is lower compared to 2008 with 19.3 percent. The highest underemployment rate across regions for 2009 was in the Bicol Region at 36.3 percent while the lowest was in Central Luzon at 7.8 percent.
