BPO Industry Generated 70,000 New Jobs

The country’s sunshine industry, the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector was able to create a total of 70,000 new jobs and posted a 19 percent increase last year.

Based on a presentation during the 10th e-Services Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition held at the SMX Convention Center, Business Processing Association of the Philippines Executive Director for Information and Research Gillian Joyce Virata said the sector now has 442, 162 employees and generated more than $7.2 billion in revenue last year, an increase of 19 percent from $6.1 billion last 2008.

The voice BPO still leads with the highest number of revenue share and job creation. It posted its 2009 revenues at $5 billion, a 22-percent increase from 2008 and gave jobs to 280,000 people. This was followed by back office or non-voice BPO, with $1.1 billion in earnings and 86,000 employees.

Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) Commissioner Ray Anthony Roxas Chua III said that the BPO industry is expected to pickup this year. He said that the country has to prepare for this by maintaining the supply of manpower and invest on infrastructure. While voice BPO is expected to grow, Comm. Chua said that non-voice BPO or knowledge process outsourcing is slowly gaining ground here in the Philippines.

In her presentation, Ms. Virata laid down the priority projects for 2010 which include the creation of a virtual BPO university, the rollout of the National Assessment Competency Program to an initial 10,000 students, the provision of P350 million worth of scholarships under the Pangulong Gloria Scholarship fund, the launch of a local and international campaign on the Filipino knowledge worker, and the conduct of the 2nd International Outsourcing Summit.

Ms. Virata said that legislation is also one of the priorities for 2010, specifically, the creation of the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the passage of the data privacy bill.
