Gov't Agencies Extended Help to Haiti Quake-Affected OFWs

The Department of Labor and Employment, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Foreign Affairs continuously extends help to the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Haiti who were affected by the January 12 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Over the last February 4, 2010, a total of 23 Filipinos have been repatriated from Haiti; six arrived on January 29, five on January 30 and 12 on January 31. Eight more OFW were sent home last Thursday through the joint efforts of the three departments.

"We will extend whatever assistance that is available for them... I have also tasked all the concerned agencies of the Department to conduct a needs assessment analysis to the repatriates to identify the kinds of assistance they need", said DOLE Secretary Marianito Roque in a press statement.

Sec. Roque said that DOLE will explore every possible effort to retrain and retool these OFWs to make them more competitive in the future and ready for possible deployment to other countries.

Based on reports, a total of 462 recorded Filipinos were in Haiti — 290 civilians and 172 military and police peacekeepers. Six Filipinos, three of them members of the RP peacekeeping contingent, were confirmed killed. The remains of the four Filipinos who died in the killer quake arrived last Tuesday, February 2, 2010, and were given a hero’s welcome.

But according to Migrante International, more than a third of the total 477 Filipinos in Haiti are classified as undocumented migrants, while many other OFWs who entered Haiti are illegal since they use tourist visas.

In a report posted at the OWWA website, DFA and DOLE are shouldering expenses for the repatriation while OWWA and DSWD will provide psycho-social as well as reintegration assistance to the repatriates. The air tickets, meanwhile, were advanced by OWWA.
