NSO Revealed Results of January 2010 Labor Force Survey

Based on the latest Labor Force Survey (LFS) of the National Statistics Office, the number of employed persons in January 2010 was estimated at 36.0 million, increasing by 5.0 percent over last year’s estimate of 34.3 million persons. This placed the country’s current employment rate at 92.7 percent.

Underemployed workers, on the other hand, were estimated at 7.1 million, compared to October 2009 estimate of 6.9 million and January 2009’s 6.2 million. Underemployed means an employed person expresses the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or to have additional job, or to have a new job with longer working hours.

The unemployment rate for January 2010 declined to 7.3 percent from 7.7 percent posted in January of 2009. This placed the number of unemployed persons to 2.8 million, down by 100,000 compared to last year.

Among the regions, only the National Capital Region (NCR) posted a double digit unemployment rate of 10.8 percent. It also scored the lowest employment rate at 89.2 percent. Last October, NCR’s unemployment rate was at 11.8 percent and an employment rate of 88.2 percent.

The report also showed that more males were unemployed than females. Across educational groups, most of the unemployed were high school graduates with 33.1%. College undergraduates comprised about 19.3 percent of the unemployed, while the college graduates, 18.5 percent.
